Two earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.7 and 3.5 on the Richter scale have been felt on the islands of Faial and Pico, in the Azores. According to CIVISA (the Azores Seismic Information and Surveillance Centre), the first quake, with a magnitude of 3.5, was recorded at 0.17 local time (1.17 a.m. in Lisbon) this morning, with its epicentre around 40 kms west of Capelo, on the island of Faial (an island in the throes of seismic crisis for months now). The second event, with a magnitude of 3.7, felt on the both the island of Faial and neighbouring Pico, happened at 1.18 a.m. local time (2.18 a.m. in Lisbon) and had its epicentre again, around 41 kms west of Capelo.
Two new earthquakes rattle Faial, Azores
The last eruption on Faial (of the Capelinhos volcano) was in 1957, and lasted 13 months. The eruption burst in the sea, about a kilometer off the coast of Capelo and Praia do Norte parishes, spawning 450 seismic events, gushing fire, lava, ashes and steam.
