Zelenskyy has already cancelled two trips to Portugal
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is due to visit Portugal on Tuesday (May 28), reports Now, Portugal’s new 24-hour news channel.
The possibility had already been strongly suggested by national press considering that Zelenskyy will be visiting Spain on Monday.
The 46-year-old Ukrainian leader is only expected to remain in Portugal one day.
The visit may be cancelled if the military situation in Ukraine escalates, says Now, just like it did in September 2023 and earlier this month, forcing the cancellation of Zelenskyy’s planned visits.
Observador newspaper reports that a safety plan seldom seen in Portugal will be implemented, with more resources deployed than during other ‘high risk’ visits such as those by Brazilian president Lula da Silva. The newspaper adds that the level of security will be comparable to a visit by an American president, for example.
