UN Security Council ‘perhaps fatally’ undermined, reiterates António Guterres

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, has said today that “the lack of unity” in the organisation’s Security Council in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Israel’s operations in Gaza has seriously, “perhaps fatally”, undermined its authority. Speaking in Geneva, Switzerland, at the opening session of the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, António Guterres once again said that “the Security Council needs a thorough reform of its composition and working methods” since “it is often blocked, unable to act on the most important peace and security issues of our time”.
