Unemployment in Portugal increases for 6th consecutive month

The number of people signing on at IEFP (the institute of employment and professional training) job centres has increased for the 6th consecutive month. Latest figures released by INE (Statistics Portugal) for December show that there was a 1.7% increase on numbers inscribed at IEFP centres in November. The total number of people considered ‘unemployed’ has now reached 317,659. This figure will not reflect the numbers of long-term unemployed, who will be no longer entitled to unemployment benefit, and living off other State subsidies.
