Ursula von der Leyen expresses EU’s support for Madeira fire combat

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has today sent a message of support to Madeira, expressing the EU’s support in fighting wildfires that have been burning for over what will be nine days as of today. She said the Copernicus emergency satellite system has been activated to ‘map’ the burnt area more quickly, while the EU itself is ready to mobilise additional resources if they are required. Meantime, president of the regional government Miguel Albuquerque has raised eyebrows, if not temperatures, by telling a press conference that in his opinion the strategy of trying to contain this fire has been “a success”…
