All the districts of mainland Portugal and the islands of Madeira and S. Miguel in the Azores are at very high risk of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation on Friday and over the weekend, according to the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
The ultraviolet radiation scale has five levels, ranging from extreme to low risk.
For regions at extreme risk, the IPMA recommends avoiding sun exposure as much as possible.
With regard to regions at very high risk, the IPMA advises wearing sunglasses with UV filters, a hat, T-shirt, parasol, sunscreen and avoiding exposing children to the sun.
For regions with a high risk, the IPMA recommends wearing sunglasses with a UV filter, a hat, a t-shirt and sunscreen.
