Event was previously held in September
Vila do Bispo Council will host its popular goose barnacle festival between June 7 and 9, three months earlier than its usual September dates.
The reasoning is that the collection of goose barnacles is prohibited between September and December in the Natural Park of the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, the local authority explained. Thus, hosting the Festival do Perceve in June makes the process of gathering the shellfish easier.
Last year’s festival was hailed a success, with over 8,000 people attending and around 4,179 kilos of seafood consumed, including 1,250 kilos of goose barnacles. It was the first year that the local council took one an organising role in partnership with the Association of Mariscadores (Shellfish Gatherers) of Vila do Bispo and Costa Vicentina.
The musical line-up and list of exhibitors for the 2024 edition is due to be announced soon. The event will take place at the São Vicente school in Vila do Bispo and aims to “promote one of the region’s biggest gastronomic assets, dynamise the economy, entertain the local community and attract new visitors.”
