Vila do Bispo unveils new walking and cycling paths

New paths for cyclists and hikers

The municipal council of Vila do Bispo has completed the construction of the ‘Ecovia e Ciclovia do Litoral Sudoeste’ (Walking and Cycling Paths of the Southwest Coast).

The €1.6 million project involved building a 26km ‘Ecovia’ walking and cycling path connecting Sagres to the neighbouring municipality of Aljezur, and a 5.5km cycling path linking the ‘Quatro Estradas’ roundabout in Sagres to the town’s famous ‘Cabo de São Vicente’ (Cape Saint Vincent).

In a statement to the press, the council says that the routes were designed along scenic, low-traffic roads, making them attractive for both locals and tourists. The ‘Ecovia’ focuses on longer, north-south coastal bike trips, although it can also be used by hikers, while the ‘Ciclovia’ bike path offers shorter rides between Sagres and the coastal popular attraction.

This project is considered a key step toward making Vila do Bispo more sustainable and environmentally friendly, promoting cycling and walking as a healthy way to explore the region. It is 70% funded by European Union programmes, including CRESC ALGARVE 2020 and Algarve 2030.
