Vila Real de Santo António donates €20.000 worth of foodstuffs to local charities

The measure aims to reinforce food assistance in the municipality and respond to the increase in demand for help in the area.

The municipality of Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA) purchased food worth €20.000 to be donated to local Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS).

The beneficiary entities were the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de VRSA, the VRSA Red Cross delegation, Refood and the Associação de Beneficência Mão Amiga, which will now be responsible for distributing the products to vulnerable families in the area.

The measure aims to reinforce food assistance in the municipality and respond to the increase in demand for help triggered by the worsening social and economic scenario caused by the pandemic and, more recently, by the war in Ukraine.

The hampers include foodstuffs such as olive oil, chickpeas, beans, rice, flour, cereal, and milk, among other goods.

“This measure will mitigate the needs of the most vulnerable population and reinforce the important proximity, help and cooperation work developed by various institutions in the municipality”, says Álvaro Araújo, mayor of VRSA.
