Vilamoura marina changes hands as ‘Best International Marina’ of 2015

Just as a change of ownership deal has been announced, Vilamoura marina has been named ‘Best International Marina’ of 2015.

The award was presented at a ceremony held in London last week (January 15).

Organised by The Yacht Harbour Association (THYA) with the support of the British Marine Federation, the ‘Best International Marina’ award goes to the marina that receives the most votes from boat owners visiting so-called ‘5-anchor’ marinas during the year.

It is yet another accolade for Vilamoura which has swept the board as ‘Best Portuguese Marina’ for the last three years.

It also flies a Blue Flag – awarded to seaside establishments that comply with strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and safety.

Behind the good news comes the revelation that the marina has finally found a buyer – though for “considerably less” than the €500 million originally mooted.

Dinheiro Vivo reports that an “undisclosed North American fund that has other business in Portugal” will be signing the deal, very possibly by the end of the month.

The marina’s management company Lusort, owned by Spanish group Catalunya Caixa Immobiliaria, announced the sale of some of the group’s companies in July last year (see: https://www.portugalresident.com/vilamoura-and-vale-do-lobo-up-for-sale)

Despite our attempts to obtain a comment from Lusort regarding the deal, this was not possible at the time of going to press.
