“About a year after moving here, I saw Cadela Carlota needed someone to sell at the Saturday Markets. My husband and I had owned a bakery for 10 years before retiring, selling products at multiple markets weekly. So, I stepped up. Initially, we sold T-shirts and dog treats. Since people came to the market for food, my husband and I started baking three varieties of cookies, and Ani made jam. Over time, we expanded, selling every Saturday instead of just once or twice a month. The market presence has brought us new volunteers and much-needed donations.”

“Beyond fundraising, raising awareness of Cadela Carlota’s work is essential. Each week, I encounter people with questions: Do we have animals for adoption? Can we help find a lost pet? Can we assist someone struggling to feed their animals? Or can we catch a feral dog for neutering? Others want to help because they have adopted from us and, in turn, support us by purchasing our products or donating.
“Beyond sales, the market stand serves as an information hub. Recently, a customer was upset after hearing that someone had surrendered their dog because they couldn’t afford medication. She felt Cadela Carlota should have covered the cost rather than take the dog. After speaking with our President, I learned the full story: the owner’s move had caused severe behavioral issues, making rehoming the best option, along with the high medical costs. Once the customer understood the complexities, she saw the decision in a different light. These conversations help keep the dialogue around Cadela Carlota truthful and positive.”
