Legionella Control and Prevention Plan is being implemented in VRSA
The municipal council of Vila Real de Santo António has announced a plan to minimise the risks of legionella contamination at municipal facilities and public spaces.
Working alongside WaterCare – Legionella Prevention Lda (LEGPREV), the municipality is implementing a Legionella Control and Prevention Plan which aims to “guarantee the health and safety of the population.”
In other words, the plan aims to safeguard public spaces and municipal facilities from the dangerous bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ disease, a severe bacterial pneumonia, which spreads through inhaling contaminated water droplets.
While the bacteria are naturally found in rivers and lakes, they thrive in artificial water systems, such as air conditioning units, pools, and showers, especially when water temperatures are between 20°C and 45°C, the council explains.
With a focus on high-risk areas like public swimming pools, locker rooms, schools, and health centres, the municipality is adhering to strict national regulations, including Law 52/2018 and subsequent updates. These laws mandate rigorous risk assessments, routine maintenance, and ongoing monitoring to ensure water systems remain safe.
“The municipality of Vila Real de Santo António remains committed to the surveillance and control of risk factors linked to legionella, showing a commitment to public safety and the prevention of diseases through partnerships and preventive measures which follow the highest health and hygiene standards,” the council says in a statement to the press.
