VRSA takes over presidency of Guadiana Eurocity

Presidency of general assembly changes every two years

The municipality of Vila Real de Santo António has taken over the presidency of the general assembly of the Guadiana Eurocity, an entity which brings together the Algarve boroughs of Castro Marim and VRSA (Portugal) and Ayamonte (Spain).

The Guadiana Eurocity was created in 2013 and recognised as a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation in 2018.

“Crossborder cooperation between two countries and three municipalities brings added value to the development of our territory as one and allows us to think and act on a broader scale, intervening in a coordinated way in areas such as tourism, accessibility, the approximation of our communities and joint events,” said VRSA mayor Álvaro Araújo.

The ceremony took place on Thursday (May 9) and was also attended by Francisco Amaral, mayor of Castro Marim and the outgoing president of the Eurocity’s general assembly, and Paloma Ogayar, deputy mayor of the Ayuntamiento de Ayamonte.

The presidency of the Guadiana Eurocity changes every two years, giving each municipality an opportunity to lead the general assembly.
