VRSA unveils new running track at sports complex

Running track expected to attract around 5,000 athletes per year

Vila Real de Santo António Council has unveiled a new running track at its local sports complex.

Around €500,000 were invested in the renovation of the track, with funding coming from the revenue of the municipal tourist tax.

The works involved the complete replacement of the track, which has eight running lanes and technical areas for throwing and jumping. It is also due to be certified for international competitions, meeting the requirements for high-level athletics competitions.

The running track is expected to attract around 5,000 athletes per year from nearly 50 countries, helping “establish the sports complex as a leading international centre for athletics,” the municipal council says.

“With this intervention, we are investing in the future of sports in our town and consolidating Vila Real de Santo António as a destination of excellence for athletics and for big international sports events,” adds local mayor Álvaro Araújo.

The VRSA sports complex is recognised as a High-Performance Training Centre by the International Association of Athletics Federations and is “one of the most certified in Europe thanks to its infrastructures and additional training equipment it offers, as well as the experience of its professionals,” the municipal council states.
