Walking football spreads its wings

The runaway success of Walking Football in Olhão has grabbed the imagination of Alan Brown from Browns Health Club and Spa at Vilamoura.

Starting with an open session on Tuesday, February 24 the weekly sessions at Browns are sure to attract those who wish to maintain an active lifestyle despite their age, as well as welcoming those who had to stop due to injuries.

Walking Football is a non-contact slow-paced version of the beautiful game aimed at the over 50s. And as the name suggests, Walking Football frowns on anyone who sprints, runs or jogs while the ball is in play.

Anyone who incurs the wrath of the referee will be penalised with a free-kick awarded to the other team.

There is less stress on the body as there is no sudden change of direction or cutting movements. The third generation astro-turf pitch is also kinder on knees and ankle joints.

The game is still competitive and no one wants to be on the losing side.

Chris Wright, who introduced the new sport to Olhão last September, said: “We will be taking a dozen players to Browns for an exhibition match on their launch date and we look forward to staging competitive games against Browns once they are established.”

Proprietor Alan Brown, who underwent a triple heart bypass operation and valve replacement a year ago, attributes his speedy recovery to walking and sees Walking Football as the next progression.

Alan is a keen sportsman who played football rigorously throughout his youth and, until recently, continued to play the odd game in the friendly matches held between Browns staff and the management of visiting sports teams.
