Warm weather threatened by rain and plunging temperatures

This weekend may be one of the last chances to enjoy the early summer-like weather in Portugal before spring kicks in again.
As seven districts – Santarém, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Portalegre, Évora and Beja – are put under yellow alert due to the possibility of rain, hail and thunder until 7pm today (May 14), temperatures are set to drop next week, announced the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
But before you put on an extra sweater, clear skies and temperatures between 25ºC to 30ºC are still expected across the country this weekend. On Monday, they are predicted to lower to around 20-25ºC.
“The recent hot weather will not be expected to continue next week,” says IPMA meteorologist Sandra Correia.
The institute is predicting maximum temperatures on Monday of 23ºC in Beja, 22ºC in Évora, 21ºC in Faro and Castelo Branco, 19ºC in Lisbon, 17ºC in Braga and 16ºC in Porto.
In Portugal’s islands, temperatures are expected to reach 20ºC in Funchal and 15ºC in Angra do Heroísmo.
