Cloudy conditions are expected to persist despite the rise in temperature, but cloud cover will decrease in the Baixo Alentejo and Algarve on Monday afternoon.
Thirteen districts have been issued an orange warning for this Monday due to conditions that could lead to heavy rain showers, hail, thunderstorms, and strong gusts of wind.
The orange alert has been activated in the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre and Braga.
According to the IPMA, temperatures will rise across the country, but the skies are expected to remain very cloudy. However, cloud cover in the Baixo Alentejo and Algarve will decrease later in the day.
Given the forecasts, “locally heavy showers, hail accompanied by thunderstorms, and strong gusts are expected, being more likely in the Southern region until mid-afternoon and in other regions from late morning onwards”.
The IPMA predicts that in the Lisbon area, there will be times of overcast weather, creating ideal conditions for heavy showers that may include hail, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
Porto is likely to experience showers later in the day, which may be intense, with hail, thunderstorms, and strong gusts of wind.
Due to the heavy showers forecast, Civil Protection issued a yellow alert for all 18 districts, especially from midday Monday to midnight Tuesday.
The yellow alert was also activated in nine districts of mainland Portugal due to the forecast of hot weather, namely Bragança, Évora, Vila Real, Guarda, Setúbal, Santarém, Beja, Castelo Branco and Portalegre, until 18h00 on Monday.
The IPMA issues an orange warning when there is a moderate to high-risk weather situation, and a yellow warning is released when certain activities could be impacted by the weather.
