Bonnie Tyler, one of the most celebrated Welsh singers of all time and the voice behind hit songs such as ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, ‘It’s a Heartache’ and ‘Holding out for a Hero’, will be performing in Albufeira in August.
Albufeira mayor José Carlos Rolo has confirmed that Bonnie Tyler will be the headlining act of the town’s Municipal Day celebrations, held every year on August 20.
The Resident spoke with the artist about the much-anticipated concert, which is certain to attract thousands of fans.
“I’ve been touring all year but I’m very excited to have been asked to do the show on the beach in Albufeira in August,” Bonnie Tyler told us.
“People can expect a 90-minute show where they will hear all my old hit songs and a few of the new songs including a beautiful song Barry Gibb wrote for me called ‘Seven Waves’. My band is made up of awesome musicians and fabulous friends of mine.”
Says the 68-year-old singer known for her distinctive husky voice, performing in the Algarve is something she has “always wanted to do”.
Bonnie “fell in love with Portugal” when she first visited the country in 1976, having bought a house here two years later.
“I have a big family of three sisters and two brothers, all of whom have children that have spent many happy holidays in our house – also on our yacht in Vilamoura. We love the Algarve’s fabulous beaches, the wonderful people, the food, and very good wine too.”
“I’m so looking forward to performing and having my old friend Sir Owen G there to introduce us on stage. It was on his Sunday morning radio show, that (Sir) Cliff and I were having interviews, when Owen suggested we do a duet,” she explained.
The duet made its way onto Bonnie’s new album ‘Between the Earth and the Stars’, released this year, which also includes duets with Sir Rod Stewart and Francis Rossi from Status Quo.
Bonnie’s career speaks for itself. Two of her songs, ‘It’s a Heartache’ and ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, are among the best-selling singles of all-time, with sales exceeding six million each.
She has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards and has received a long list of accolades, including three Goldene Europa awards, an Echo Award, a Variety Club of Great Britain Award, a Gold Badge Award for her contribution to Britain’s Music Industry, and a Steiger Award for a lifetime career in music.
“This year I am celebrating 50 years in the music business and still have such fun on stage with my wonderful band, but I never ever imagined that I’d still be in demand all over the world at my age,” Bonnie told us.
