Why environmental awareness matters to Algarve tourists

As global awareness of climate change and environmental impact grows, sustainability has become a priority for many tourists. Many are seeking eco-friendly destinations, making it crucial for businesses in the tourism industry to adopt sustainable practices.

SandyBlue recognises the importance of this shift and has embraced initiatives that not only enhance the guest experience but also contribute to protecting the natural beauty that makes the Algarve such a sought-after destination.

Sustainable travel demand is growing

The modern tourist is more conscious of their ecological footprint than ever before. From reducing single-use plastics to opting for eco-conscious accommodation, tourists are making choices that reflect their commitment to the environment. More than 70% of global tourists are actively seeking sustainable options when planning their vacations.

This growing number of eco-aware tourists is motivated by a desire to protect natural beauty, reduce waste and support local communities that prioritise sustainability. By choosing eco-friendly accommodations and practices, tourists feel they are playing a part in ensuring that the beauty and cultural richness of destinations like the Algarve can be enjoyed for years to come.

In a region like the Algarve, the pressure to maintain the natural beauty has never been greater. Giving back to the region and the community is important, leading the SandyBlue team to take part in the annual Environmental Clean-Up Week.

The Environmental Clean-Up Event

The Environmental Clean-Up week is organised by Awaze, aiming to give back to local communities with teams volunteering their time to collect rubbish, plant trees or clear paths of debris.

The SandyBlue team headed to Praia do Trafal to contribute to this global event. The efforts of the team not only improved the aesthetics of the beaches but also helped protect the marine life that thrives in these waters. Plastic pollution in particular poses a significant threat to the wildlife that inhabits the Algarve’s coastline, so efforts like these make a big impact. Thirty-one team members collected 36 bags of rubbish – approximately 900 litres in total.

SandyBlue views sustainability as a collective responsibility, recognising that efforts like the clean-up week contribute to the long-term health and appeal of the Algarve. This initiative was more than just a one-off event – SandyBlue is actively looking at ways to integrate similar activities into our corporate social responsibility agenda, ensuring ongoing involvement in community-driven environmental projects.

A sustainable future

As tourism continues to thrive in this beautiful region, SandyBlue continues to work with our owner partners to make small but impactful changes. This will only be more attractive to future guests who are seeking accommodation where sustainability matters.
