A poignant exhibition on the devastating wildfires in Monchique is opening next Saturday, September 15, at 5pm in Aljezur’s Espaço + gallery.
The work of local artist Frederik Beerbaum falls into three categories, and includes paintings he produced after the fires of 2003 – a series entitled “Where no birds sing”.
The “sort of triptych” exhibition will show how Beerbaum’s experience here has been indelibly marked by summer wildfires. In 2003 particularly, he worked in the open air “amidst the heat and ashes”, smelling “extinction”. But there came hope, weeks later, with the first green shoots on wounded hillsides and this hope is a message the artist carries throughout.
A show that is bound to affect all those who followed these fires with a sense of hopelessness and trepidation, it will include cards that can be bought to support local firefighters.
Open Monday to Saturday, timetables vary. Check www.cm-aljezur.pt
