A 41-year-old prisoner managed to ‘break out’ of Tires women’s prison yesterday, using a chair to reach a simple wire fence which she then climbed up to effect her escape. According to reports, the woman – a repeat offender – took advantage of the fact that there was only one guard on duty to watch around 100 prisoners as they enjoyed ‘time out’ on a patio. Guards’ union representative Frederico Morais has admitted the incident highlights “the fragility of security” in Portuguese prisons that have “few guards and inadequate resources”.
