Women’s only ride-hailing platform “to open in days”

Women driven exclusively by women, to make clients feel safer

Pinker, a new ride-hailing platform just for women will become operational in the next few days.

Founder Mónica Faneco has been telling Lusa that Pinker aims to give women security when they request a vehicle – which will be driven exclusively by women.

This is the main difference between Pinker and its competitors already operating in Portugal, Uber and Bolt.

We want to bring safety and confidence to women in our services, as an alternative to what exists,” explains Faneco, refusing to be drawn any further on safety issues within the sector.

Pinker’s operation will begin “at the end of this week, the beginning of next week”, she said. It will start in Lisbon, then expand to Porto and other locations.

She said the project was first conceived in 2019. The idea matured during the hiatus of the pandemic “and helped things to become well structured” until this year, when the everything came together to initiate the launch.

“It’s a 100% Portuguese app, which wasn’t easy to create from scratch. It took a lot of investment, but we managed to deal with everything calmly to get it up and running,” said the entrepreneur.

Already the app is “having a great acceptance” judging from pre-registrations on the platform, both by users and drivers (for which there are already more than 1,000 interested) – and male feedback is also “very good”.

Men have daughters and wives (…) they tell me it’s an excellent alternative because it’s aimed at the female public and only has female drivers,” she said.

Pinker is already licensed in Portugal and Europe, so now it’s simply a question of seeing how it takes off.

As Lusa recalls, six years after the law governing ‘ride-hailing platforms’ came into force, two are working in Portugal: Uber and Bolt, thus Pinker will bring a breath of challenging competition.
