Worldwide anti-Trump protest comes to Lagos

“Hands Off” demonstration a day of action to fight for democracy

Americans, outraged by the chaos and destruction by the Trump presidency, rallied in Lagos on Saturday. They were joined by like-minded people from many countries.

They spoke up against the Republican agenda in America, calling it a “hostile takeover” and an attack on American rights and freedoms. The Lagos gathering was part of more than 1,400 international demonstrations, including those in Lisbon and Porto. In total, well over half a million protesters participated. No arrests or violence were reported.

“The dictatorship in Portugal ended 50 years ago with the Carnation Revolution,” one Lagos speaker said, “now, in the United States, Trump wants to be the dictator.”

They chanted, “Hands off our free speech, healthcare, education, and pensions, and long live democracy”.

“This mass mobilization day is our message to the world that we do not consent to the destruction of our governments and our economies for the benefit of Trump and his billionaire allies.”

The Hands Off 2025 flyer reads, “Alongside Americans across the USA, we are marching, rallying, and protesting to demand a stop to the chaos and the dismantling of democracies around the world. Join us as we stand together in solidarity to oppose the erosion of democratic principles”.
