The number of young offenders interned in remand centres in Portugal has reached its highest figure since 2022, totalling 136, most of them aged between 15 and 17, according to Portugal’s Reintegration and Prison Services Department. The latest report from the Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP) indicates that the number of young people in remand centres on February 29 was 136, the highest number since June 2022, when 121 were in these establishments. The majority are in educational centres because they have committed crimes of physical harm, threats, coercion, defamation/ slander/ libel, theft and robbery, writes Lusa.
