Young woman dies after falling from Sagres cliff

Authorities suspect accident fall from a height of 40 metres

A 26-year-old German woman died today (April 15) after falling 40 metres from a cliff at Rebolinhos beach in Sagres, Vila do Bispo.

Authorities were alerted at around 1.30pm after the body was spotted on the eastern section of Martinhal beach, to the west of Rebolinhos, Lagos port captain Hugo da Guia told Lusa news agency.

A Sagres lifeboat was deployed to the scene as the area is hard to reach by foot, he added.

The woman was already dead when help arrived. According to evidence gathered so far, authorities believe she was the victim of an “accidental fall from a height of 40 metres.”

The body has been taken to Portimão Hospital’s legal medicine office, where an autopsy will be carried out.

According to the information available on the website of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection, a total of 16 members from the Maritime Authority, volunteer firefighters from Vila do Bispo, the National Institute of Medical Emergency, and the Portuguese Red Cross were involved in the operation.
