It goes without saying, or does it? The current financial climate doesn’t help pet owners at all. We love our pets, as we say, “to death” … sometimes tragically, through unintentional, nevertheless careless, neglect. Seasonal changes make it difficult too. Leishmaniasis and heartworm are caused by insect bites. Parvovirus a lethal virus. Infestation is devastating to the pets.
Jenny Clarke, president of APAA, has seen the result of cats and dogs with these illnesses. All three require blood tests prior to preventative treatment. All almost untreatable in later stages. “There are new products, vastly better than the older ones.”
Some animals had tragic reaction to some of the earlier vaccinations. “We do have products that may look more expensive but, in reality, are not, as the protection offered covers a whole range of problems.”
Association for Protection of Animals Algarve has no quick-fix solution. “But the vets know and are readily able to advise clients on what to use, taking your individual pet’s health and age into consideration.” One ‘Supervet’ has new products that can help the pet and pocket. For instance, ‘Leisguard’ protects against Leishmania and can be administered in syrup form on furry friend’s food. ‘NexGuard’ tablets provide protection against heartworm, gut worms, fleas and ticks. No collars or separate tablets. Important! Consult with your vet.
Jenny has just completed a pet food run to Pet Park (Mexilhoeira Grande) for the APAA ‘lodgers’. Gary is fraught. “Wendy is out of action with a broken ankle.” Slipped up on a wet floor. Get well soon, Wendy!
