PORTUGAL’S EXPECTANT mothers have entered the Guinness Book of Records with a gathering of the most pregnant women in one place at one time.
A total of 1,307 women met at the Parque dos Poetas in Oeiras last weekend and beat the previous record of 1,146, which was set in Johannesburg on May 19.
Women from all over Portugal came together for the event, which was organised by Carlos Noivo, who said: “The whole event exceeded our expectations. We beat the record!”
The weather helped the meeting, with a sunny day helping encourage all the expectant women and their families to participate in the Guinness challenge.
“We asked the Instituto de Meteorologia (national weather authority) to give us a weather prediction for this exact day and place”, Carlos Noivo told reporters at the event.
The local fire department was also at the Parque in case of any difficulties or if anyone went into labour.
Ambulances and emergency teams were on hand, especially prepared for any special deliveries.
As some of the participants were in their final days of pregnancy, the risk of hearing a baby’s cry at the scene was very real for the organisers.
The president of the Oeiras Câmara, Isaltino Morais, said this was a “big event”.
“Pregnancy always transmits very positive feelings to everyone”, he said.
