The granddaughter of Doctor Harry Stanley-Turner, Caroline Beard, inherited her grandfather’s journals, photos and papers. She was fascinated with what she found. Her grandfather qualified at Guy’s Hospital. He joined the Colonial Service a few years later and was posted to the Falklands in 1909, complete with pregnant wife and three children.
He was posted to Fox Bay on West Island and when World War One broke out he was put in charge of forming the Home Guard in Port Stanley. He returned to the UK in 1915 and joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. His journals give a full and interesting picture of life in the Falklands from 1909-1915.
Caroline has given this talk on a number of occasions in the UK and now she will share his story on May 14 and 15, at the Municipal Library in Tavira and the Municipal Library in Lagoa, respectively, both at 6pm.
This talk is organised by the Algarve History Association.
