The Algarve’s hotel sector celebrated its best September since 2000.
According to the region’s hotelier association (AHETA), 89.2% of the Algarve’s hotel rooms were booked last month, up 1.9% compared to last year and the highest percentage in 17 years.
The positive results were helped by a substantial increase in the number of German holidaymakers (17.7%) and an increase in the number of tourists from other markets such as Poland, Belgium, Ireland, France, Sweden, Denmark and Italy.
The downside was that there were fewer Portuguese (-7.6%) and British (-2.3%) staying at regional hotels.
Data also shows that Monte Gordo/Vila Real de Santo António (+6.2%), Albufeira (+3.7%) and Carvoeiro/Armação de Pêra (+3%) were where bookings grew the most.
Business volume at regional hotel also grew 7.2%.
Taking the first nine months of 2017 into account, hotel bookings in the Algarve have increased 2.2% compared to the same period last year.
