Algarve students win prestigious business contest

Two Algarve university students have won an enterprising business ideas contest in Lisbon.

The young marine biologists’ project for breeding oysters to supply both nurseries and natural stocks won over a total of more than 150 entries in the “Desafio Mar” (sea challenge) competition, hosted by PT.

Márcia Santos and Maurício Namora – both studying at the University of the Algarve – will now have access to a special business start-up kit, promoted by PT, as well as valuable advice and direction, which should help them in their approaches to potential investors.

The “Desafios Mar” contest brought all manner of interesting and creative ideas to the fore. There was even an ‘intelligent life jacket’ which sent out SOS calls to the authorities with details of its wearer.

The winning project, entitled “Maternidade de Ostras”, was submitted under the Fishing, Aquaculture and Industry category, and judged last weekend at Lisbon’s Festival of Innovation and Creativity.
