The head of the Algarve University (UAlg) admitted recently that the educational establishment will not be able to function ‘normally’ or pay staff salaries in 2013, if planned budgetary cuts for Portuguese universities are implemented by the government. João Guerreiro said that if the 2013 State Budget goes ahead as planned and cuts funding by 10%, then UAlg will face considerable financial hardship as, in their case, a 12% reduction in governmental assistance is expected. “Our university will be unable to function if such cuts are brought in next year,” he said, adding that last year an 8.5% cut had already been imposed.
