It’s a new idea to help “overcome financial problems” at the University of the Algarve (UAlg) and it involves creating courses to attract foreign students to come and study here.
Talking to Correio da Manhã newspaper the day after he was elected new rector of the university, António Branco revealed there could be courses offering English, French and even Mandarin Chinese.
“The Algarve is a cosmopolitan region and UAlg has good conditions for foreign students to want to study here,” he said.
Elected by a total of 18 votes – beating two other competitors for the post – Branco promises a “reorganisation” of what is on offer at the university and the creation of a number of new language courses.
In his first interview with journalists, he lamented recent government cuts to the university budget that have left it like others around the country struggling to make ends meet.
