Hungarian piano maestro István Lajkó will be giving two concerts at Os Agostos country estate, near Santa Bárbara de Nexe, in June.
The first will be on Tuesday, June 12 and István will play music by Béla Bartók, Franz Liszt, Mily Balakirev and Robert Schumann. The second concert will take place on Thursday, June 14 and will feature music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Peter Tchaikovsky.
István was born in 1982 in Budapest. He started to play the piano at the age of eight. In 2001, he was admitted to Budapest’s Franz Liszt Academy of Music from where he graduated with honours in 2007. At the same institution, he studied with Rita Wagner whose teaching methods are said to be exceptional.
István earned his doctorate with summa cum laude in 2014. Continuing his studies, he won an Erasmus scholarship and went to the Hochschule für Musik und Theatre Hannover before moving to New York’s Juilliard School of Music.
The musician has won several prestigious prizes over the years. In 2009, he received the Special Prize of the Jury in the EU International Piano Competition in Prague. He has won several scholarships including that of the Hungarian Republic and the Annie Fischer Scholarship of the Philharmonia Budapest for three consecutive years (2008-2010).
István has performed throughout Europe as well as in China and the USA.
Between 1993 and 1995, István played 20th century piano pieces in concerts which were later published on video. Probably István’s most celebrated recording is the 2014 world premiere of Liszt’s Faust Symphony in the piano solo transcription by the 16-year-old Carl Taussig which had enormous success.
Other notable events included concerts for all Prokofiev’s complete works for violin and piano with the Russian violinist Andrey Baranov.
Amigos de Música concerts at Os Agostos begin at 7pm sharp. Doors open at 6pm and wine, fruit juices and canapés will be served. There will also be a short interval with refreshments served. Entry donation is €25 per person for guests and non-members.
The Amigos de Música is an international group of around 90 members who stage musical activities by internationally renowned musicians and also sponsor young Portuguese musicians. It is a non-profit organisation and celebrated its 27th anniversary last year.
