August holiday season marked by 147 road traffic deaths

THE PORTUGUESE road traffic police have registered 147 deaths between July and August this year on Portuguese roads.

Coincidentally, the figures are exactly the same for the two months registered in 2006 by the Brigada de Trânsito GNR.

From July 1 until August 31 there were a total of 18,560 road traffic accidents, 248 fewer than were registered for the same period last year.

From these accidents there were 147 deaths, 501 serious injuries, and 5, 854 light injuries, representing a decrease overall by 246.

These figures are overall disappointing for the police and government given its nationwide traffic campaign Verão Seguro, Safe Summer, that has been running since the beginning of June.

In the month of August alone there were registered 8,964 accidents – 688 fewer than in 2006, which resulted in 78 deaths, 249 serious injuries and 2,790 light injuries.
