Barlavento Hospital, Portimão

Dear Editor,

I feel I must put  my thoughts about this hospital in writing for all foreign residents to read. I was diagnosed with breast cancer from the mobile mammogram unit in Lagos earlier this year. It was then followed up by six months of intravenous chemotherapy (not as bad as feared!). I then underwent a full mastectomy (breast removal).

The care and standard of cleanliness and efficiency of the oncology day clinic was second-to-none. The same with the surgical ward and doctors and nurses that operated and then looked after me for my 10-day stay. I am so pleased I didn’t ‘rush’ back to the UK for my treatment as many residents do!

I am a resident here in Portugal and I am proud to say that the health care has been superb!

I am ashamed to say my Portuguese leaves a lot to be desired, but everyone and I mean everyone, that I came in contact with spoke English to me. I thank them all for this!!

Please foreign residents, don’t panic if you hear the words cancer after a diagnosis, as the care you will receive here in the Algarve will outshine any other European country.

I am extremely well now, but if the time comes for more treatment I will have no fears about returning to this hospital. Thank you once again to everyone!!!
