IT IS well-known that Christmas can be an expensive time, especially when it comes to the purchase of alcohol but one criminal went too far in order to tighten the purse strings.
The thief drove a truck into a Dublin Guinness brewery and made off with 180 kegs of Guinness, 180 kegs of Budweiser and 90 kegs of Carlsberg worth an estimated £45,000 (62,350 euros) and totalling 40,000 pints.
A spokesperson for brewers Diageo Ireland said it is the first time such a robbery has taken place on the company’s premises. “All CCTV footage on site is being viewed and the Gardai are also looking at CCTV footage along the quays”. Police have launched an investigation into the robbery and have appealed for information.
Around 250 lorries arrive and leave the brewery every day and it is unknown how security was breached. Police believe an abandoned van found last Thursday may be connected to the theft.
Diageo has warned drinks retailers and pubs around Ireland to watch out for the stolen kegs, which all carry specific ID numbers.
