British tourist dies in road accident

A family holiday ended in tragedy when a 40-year-old British woman died in a road accident in full view of her nine-year-old daughter, two nephews and a sister. The victim was hit as she walked across the road to seek help for a puncture in the hired car she was driving.

The fatality happened late last Tuesday evening on the EN395, on a poorly lit stretch between Vale Paraíso and Ferreiras, Albufeira. It is believed poor weather conditions led to unclear visibility in the area.

The woman was hit by an open-back van as she made her way towards a car wash centre to ask for assistance. The impact was so violent she was thrown a distance of 10 metres.

Red Cross and ambulance crews called to the scene tried for several minutes to resuscitate the woman but a doctor declared her dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the van was in a state of shock and had to receive medical assistance.

The family was staying at a holiday resort in Albufeira and was due to return home the following day.

The identity of the victim has not yet been revealed and police are investigating the cause of the accident.
