Early this year when the Algarveans Experimental Theatre Group decided to perform the acclaimed stage show Calendar Girls, the hunt began for a local worthy cause.
The poignant play written by Tim Firth portrayed the ethos of the meaning of cancer to all those it touches and the ingenious efforts of fundraising for a new sofa. Naturally, the theatre group sought to donate funds raised to help those suffering from the invasive disease and their chosen charity was the Associação Oncológica do Algarve (AOA).
The Algarveans have recently announced that through the donations received for specially produced calendars featuring the Algarve’s own Calendar Girls, together with funds raised from ticket sales and raffle donations, a total sum of Є11,182 was achieved and a cheque delivered to the AOA for their project Casa Flor das Dunas.
Conveniently situated next to the Radiology Unit on land donated by Faro municipal authority, Casa Flor das Dunas will house those patients requiring daily treatment in specially designed ensuite rooms for them and their families.
The funds will enable the association to apply for a grant in 2014 to begin building phase one.
