Cancer centre

The Oncological Centre in Vila Real, in the north of Portugal, which will treat 80 per cent of cancer cases in the region, should begin operating in early 2008.

The centre will serve half-a-million people in the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro regions and is one of the first of its kind outside the large urban centres after Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra.

The new unit will be able to treat cancer of the lung, prostate, uterus, bladder, breast, colon, skin and stomach.
