A five-year-old child attending a primary school in Loulé sat at the school canteen without lunch, while his colleagues ate, because his parents had not paid the meal fees.
The case has caused a wave of protests in the Dra Laura Ayres School Group, with parents calling for the resignation of its director Conceição Bernardes.
According to Público newspaper, both the Regional Director of Education in the Algarve, Alberto Almeida, and Mayor of Loulé, Seruca Emídio, have condemned the director’s attitude. Bernardes claims all parents had been warned that overdue meal fees had to be paid by October 9.
