A FIVE year old boy has been attacked by an adult chimpanzee that was loose in Bombarral, in the north of Portugal.
The animal only released the child from its grip after intervention by local people.
It was then returned to its cage by its owner. The boy’s wound was treated in the local health centre, where he was also given an anti-rabies injection.
The child had benn walking through the local cemetery with his grandmother when the chimp jumped on him and began biting him.
According to the GNR the owner did not have the correct legal ownership documentation for the animal.
However, the animal remains with its owner during the open criminal process, which has been filed by the child’s family.
