Cleaning companies investigated for €25 million in tax fraud

Putting a new spin on the expression ‘taken to the cleaners’, public prosecutors and AT tax authority inspectors have been raiding various locations in and around Lisbon today on suspicions of a scam involving cleaning companies potentially defrauding the State of up to €25 million in taxes. Says SIC television, the companies allegedly created a false billing system, allowing them to skip IVA and Social Security payments. The ‘clients’ of these companies are described as town councils and hospitals.
