Counterfeit toothpaste

TOOTHPASTE THOUGHT to be contaminated with a toxic substance has been withdrawn from the shelves following an alert issued by the European Commission.

The information came through from Brussels on Friday after the EC received information from the Spanish authorities concerning counterfeit toothpaste containing the illegal substance dietilenglicol, which is toxic if ingested in high doses.

The ASAE (Autoridade de Segurança Alimentar e Económia) Food Safety Authority carried out a number of inspections in commercial areas throughout the country where they removed 60,000 units of the toothpaste – 40,000 of which was counterfeit Colgate.
