Rejection by the constitutional court of some budgetary measures approved by the government is a “particular difficulty” for Portugal, said the International Monetary Fund’s Christine Lagarde.
During the annual press conference by the IMF and the World Bank, Lagarde said: “In the case of Portugal we have a particular difficulty which has to do with the view taken by the constitutional court, which has overriding authority in the country to decide what is or what is not constitutional. And that has led to regular revisiting of the programme in order to comply with the requirements set out by the constitutional court.
“But, given that the programme is moving on and that the reviews are taking place, clearly the government is addressing those issues and we strongly hope that they will continue to do that, for the good of the country and for the good of the Portuguese people.”
