Curious find on Quarteira beach

Recent heavy rain has exposed a large hole on Quarteira beach which, ironically, once served in the 1950s as a collection tank for rainwater in order to prevent sand being flushed into the sea.

The hole, which is located in front of the Edifício Girassol and has aroused much curiosity, is several metres wide and two metres deep and houses a structure of cement, iron and tiles with 13 compartments designed for the retention of rainwater.

Over a period of six decades, the sandy area, used more recently as a 5-a-side beach soccer pitch,  covered the construction measuring some 30 metres, and it was forgotten until now.
