Delta variant present in 98.6% of SARS-CoV-2 infections

Despite all the measures designed to halt its spread, the Delta variant is now responsible for 98.6% of all SARS-CoV-2 infections. João Paulo Gomes of INSA (public health institute) has told this morning’s presentation to the government by experts at Infarmed that the British/ Kent variant is now only responsible for 1% of infections, while the Brazilian variant remains “residual”, and the South African almost non-existent (“it hasn’t been detected in recent weeks”). Meantime, the bottom-line message is that Portugal will face new variants in the future, but everything suggests the vaccines will continue to confer good protection.
