A social experiment undertaken by The Reader’s Digest magazine, which aimed to see how many people would return purposely “lost” wallets in various international cities, placed Lisbon at the bottom of the “honesty” ranking.
The wallets contained a note with a name and phone number, a family picture, coupons, business cards and $50. Out of the total 12 wallets that were dropped in the Portuguese capital, only one was returned, by a Dutch couple.
Helsinki, in Finland, emerged as the most “honest” city, with 11 of the 12 wallets returned.
