IN A highly unusual development for the game of tennis, online gambling firm Betfair took the unprecedented step of voiding all bets placed on a particular second round encounter at the Polish Open.
Suspicions were raised by betting patterns during the match between world number four Nikolay Davydenko and Argentine outsider Martin Vassallo Arguello. More than five million euros in wagers were returned as the Russian favourite took the first set only to lose the next and then retire hurt. The ATP player’s union is now investigating the incident.
