PORTUGAL’S motorists may have to pay more for their fuel if a new proposal from the government is approved.
A project to create the Contribuição de Serviço Rodoviário, a new tax for all people using national roads, was discussed in a special parliamentary commission on fiscal matters on Wednesday (June 26).
If this goes ahead, motorists face paying an extra 0.064 and 0.086 euros for each litre of petrol and diesel.
The idea is to compensate the state company Estradas de Portugal for the costs of maintenance of the national roads network.
Road users will pay based on distances travelled. However, it doesn’t specify exactly how the measurement is made.
The same document clarifies that this new tax “will not aggravate the existing tax over the energy consuming” and that it will not affect the future creation of toll booths in highways or main roads.
