Drugs and illegal immigrants found on board river ferries

A joint operation between the maritime police and the immigration and border control authorities (SEF) which inspected ferries doing the river crossing from Lisbon to Cacilhas led to deportation orders for six illegal immigrants and the confiscation of 480 doses of hashish and five of amphetamines.

A source from the maritime authorities revealed that 12 ferries were inspected and nearly 1,000 people were identified, including 59 passengers who were not European Union citizens.

The second phase of the operation, which aimed to guarantee passenger and goods safety on board maritime vehicles, particularly overnight, ended last Friday after the first phase had taken place a week before.

The action involved 43 maritime police officers and 12 SEF officials.
